Iowa Shelter’s mission (formerly Churches United Shelter) is to provide free shelter to homeless adults and families regardless of physical or emotional conditions, and to facilitate their move toward self-sufficiency.
       
Opportunities:
  • provide, prepare and serve the 6:30 p.m. evening meal for approximately 100 adults  
  • sack lunches or Sunday snacks
  • Bingo
  • music
  • routine maintenance - window washing, painting and general tidying up

Dedicated to the care and support of children with special healthcare needs and their families in central Iowa, providing residential and community services to more than 1500 children and their families each year.

Be a Friendship Host for an international student at Drake University.  Help a student ease into the American way of life while learning more about the student’s culture at the same time.

 

Opportunities:

  • Meet for a snack at the Drake McDonalds
  • Invite them for a holiday dinner
  • Keep in touch with notes, e-mail, etc.

Des Moines Area Religious Council Print E-mail

Meredith Drive Reformed Church is an active participant with many other area churches, assisting DMARC and their Help Stop Hunger Program in making free food available for needy persons through eight pantry sites. 

 

Opportunities:

  • sort and shelve food donations at the pantries 
  • delivery of food items to food pantry
